The USDA’s September Cold Storage Report left many scratching their heads. While most expected an August disappearance of between 20 and 25 million pounds, inventories went down a paltry 7.3 million; the smallest disappearance since 1975.  While the USDA claims that they checked the data for errors, the only logical explanation is that someone didn’t report.  Based on recent developments, it is not inconceivable to assume that ADM’s July exit from the pecan industry may have resulted in an inadvertent failure to report any remaining inventory. Since they were no longer operating, the USDA may not have even called them.  Due to government privacy rules, they were unable to shed any light on the situation.  The only good news is the fact that at the end of August, there were 35.4 million less pounds in inventory than at the same time a year ago.

If there are no revisions to the August data in the next Cold Storage report, the supply situation shapes up as follows:

2020 Crop Year (est.)

2021 crop Year (est.)

Carry-In

201,470,000

176,083,000

US Crop

305,360,000

322,000,000

Mexican Imports

256,969,000

223,000,000

Total Supply

763,799,000

721,083,000

Carry-Out

176,083,000

Consumption

587,716,000

NOTE: Assumes a 50% meat to inshell conversion rate.

Exports continue to be a bright spot.  Topped only by 2017, exports were up in almost every major market.  Led by Germany, whose imports have increased from 2.2 million pounds in 2009 to 18.2 million pounds in 2020, any losses in the Chinese market have been absorbed elsewhere around the world. While the US/China trade war continues to hamper shipments there, exports to China jumped 65.5% over the same period a year ago (see Export PDF on Pecan Crop Statistics page under the Market Conditions drop down).

The USDA will release the first of their 2021 Pecan Crop estimates next week.  While unlikely, hopefully it will help to clarify the supply situation.
